Shooting with JJ Lawhorn: A Day to Remember Outside Nashville
There are some days in life that just feel like they were meant to happen — when your passion meets your heroes, and everything lines up just right. That’s exactly how I felt recently when I had the incredible opportunity to photograph country music artist JJ Lawhorn just outside of Nashville, Tennessee.
This wasn’t just another shoot. This was a full-circle moment for me.
I’ve been a fan of JJ’s music for years — ever since I first saw him live back in 2014. I still remember the raw energy of that show, the way his lyrics cut through the noise with stories of southern life, faith, and grit. His music isn’t just sound — it’s rooted in something real. Something you can feel in your bones if you’ve ever spent time under a wide country sky or driven down a backroad with the windows down and nothing but good music and God on your mind.
So, getting to work with JJ — not just as a fan, but as a photographer — was nothing short of surreal.
The way he carries himself in front of the camera is just like how he sings — honest, grounded, and unapologetically southern. He’s not trying to play a part or fit a mold. He is the real deal.
Between shots, we talked about life, music, and faith. JJ’s connection to his roots runs deep, and his relationship with God is something he wears proudly. It’s refreshing in a world where authenticity can be hard to find. You can tell he’s never lost sight of who he is — a country boy with a heart for his people and a calling that goes beyond just making music.
Getting to capture that — not just the artist, but the man behind the music — was an honor I won’t soon forget.
To say I’m grateful would be an understatement. This shoot reminded me why I fell in love with photography in the first place: to freeze those moments that feel bigger than words, to tell stories that resonate, and to shine a light on people who are doing something meaningful.
