A Summer Road Trip from West to East Glacier and Hiking Two Medicine

There’s something about Glacier National Park in the summer that feels like stepping into a postcard — snow-capped peaks, crystalline lakes, and more wildlife than a National Geographic special. This summer, I took a road trip that cut straight through the heart of the park, from the lush, busy western gateway to the rugged serenity of the east side. Our final destination? The lesser-known but breathtaking Two Medicine area. Here’s how it went — and why you should add this to your summer adventure list.

Starting Point: West Glacier

The trip began in West Glacier, where the air smells like pine and every direction feels like it belongs on a hiking boot ad. The west entrance is the busiest part of the park, and for good reason. Lake McDonald sparkled under the sun, and the Going-to-the-Sun Road — Glacier’s most iconic drive — beckoned with jaw-dropping views and hairpin turns.

We grabbed coffee and bear spray (very different energy sources) in Apgar Village before hitting the road. Tip: Start early to avoid traffic and make the most of the light. The Going-to-the-Sun Road is only open seasonally, usually late June through mid-September, depending on snowpack.

The Drive: Going-to-the-Sun Road

You haven’t truly experienced Glacier until you’ve driven this road. Climbing past waterfalls, alpine valleys, and hanging gardens, it’s not just a drive — it’s an immersive mountain experience. We stopped at Logan Pass, the highest point on the road, where mountain goats casually photobomb tourists and wildflowers stretch out like confetti on the hillsides.

Expect to take your time — not just because of the narrow roads and slow traffic, but because you’ll want to pull over every ten minutes for photos. Just make sure you’ve got a timed entry reservation if you’re visiting during peak hours in summer.

Destination: Two Medicine, East Glacier

After descending the east side of the park, we detoured south toward Two Medicine. Compared to the crowds around Lake McDonald and Logan Pass, Two Medicine felt like a well-kept secret. The drive in follows the eastern front of the Rockies, with massive peaks rising from golden plains — a dramatic contrast to the denser forests of the west.

We set up camp near Two Medicine Lake, where the sunsets are quiet and fiery, mirrored in water so still it looks like a painting.

Final Thoughts

The trip from West to East Glacier isn’t just a transfer from one part of the park to another — it’s a journey through Glacier’s stunning diversity. From the grandeur of Going-to-the-Sun Road to the peaceful beauty of Two Medicine, this road trip captures the soul of Montana’s crown jewel.

Whether you're chasing waterfalls or just want to get lost in the mountains for a few days, a west-to-east road trip capped off with a hike in Two Medicine is one of the most rewarding ways to experience Glacier in the summer.

Pro Tips:

  • Bring layers — even in July, weather changes fast at elevation.
  • Pack your food before heading to Two Medicine; services are limited.
  • Always carry bear spray and know how to use it.
  • If camping, book early. Two Medicine fills up fast in the summer.
